Full-time, fixed-term contract until 30 June 2021 based in Darwin About Menzies:Menzies School of Health Research is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes dedicated to improving Indigenous, global and tropical health. Menzies works at the frontline, joining with partners across the Asia-Pacific as well as Indigenous communities across northern and central Australia.About the position:Mental illnesses are among the fastest growing health problems nationwide and Indigenous Australians and people from culturally diverse backgrounds are at high risk. Menzies tackles these challenges by empowering the communities through strengths-based research approaches and developing scientific evidence through randomised controlled trials. Menzies’ projects focus on identifying problems early, and then developing, trailing tools and interventions, and translating evidence into practice to help communities and individuals to stay strong – socially, spiritually, emotionally and mentally.Our research focus includes communicating 'two-way' mental health messages and discovering ways to overcome language and literacy barriers; addressing mental health literacy needs in remote and urban settings for primary care and specialist services; developing the skills of Indigenous researchers and to conduct research that provides practical, evidence based and culturally appropriate early intervention and treatment; training service providers in the use of developed resources with a key focus on e-mental health tools; and disseminating and promoting strength-based mental health messages to promote wellbeing and resilience.Primary Responsibilities:Project management, development, implementation and evaluation of mental health promotion initiatives.Contribute to strengthening the research capability and health promotion in mental health and substance use.Work closely with the Mental Health team on the e-Mental Health in Practice project (eMHPrac), Wellbeing Intervention for Chronic Kidney Disease trial (WICKD), Aboriginal and Islander Mental health initiative for Youth (AIMhi-Y), and the Social Media Campaign, and other related studies.Lead and contribute to data collection and analysis, publications, and development of mental health promotion initiatives.Maintain regular professional communication and engagement with a range of relevant stakeholders including community members, healthcare providers, community-controlled organisations, and researchers.Prepare and present statistical information and research findings to varied audiences through reports, publications and conference presentations and assist in the translation of the research findings into policy and practice.Co-supervise or where appropriate, supervise post-graduate and trainees within the field of expertise.The successful applicant will have:A PhD in a relevant health or social sciences related field along with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience.Experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of mental health promotion initiatives.Excellent skills in building relationships and working collaboratively with key stakeholders and local communities.Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal guidance, and as part of a multidisciplinary health promotion/research team.Demonstrated capacity to conduct independent research with high quality research outputs including publication and translation into policy or practice.High level oral communication skills with the ability to work with people from diverse cultures and disciplines, and to communicate research findings to varied audiences including community members and conference presentations.Proven experience in the preparation of grant applications and applications for funding as well as an understanding of, or an ability to acquire understanding of, the ethical considerations for conducting research with human participants.An understanding and awareness of relevant Workplace Health and Safety as well as Equal Opportunity principles and legislation along with a commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe workplace for all Menzies staff, students, volunteers and visitors.Contact: Professor Tricia Nagel on 08 8946 8449 or tricia.nagel@menzies.edu.au What we offer:6 weeks annual leaveOption to increase super to 14%Attractive salary package and benefits $119,893 - $139,476 salary package (comprising gross salary $94,935 - $111,277 pa, pro-rata, superannuation and salary packaging benefits.Closing date:  14 February 2020Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to applyApplicants are required to address the selection criteria. For information on how to apply for this position and to obtain the Position Description and Selection Criteria please visit http://careers.menzies.edu.au/ or phone 08 8946 8626.   Senior Health Promotion Officer AUD Darwin
