 Part-time (0.2 FTE) contract until 31 December 2025Based in Darwin This position is designated for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people onlyBe part of an exciting opportunity!Menzies is looking for an l Research Assistant to join the Global and Tropical Health - Communicate Study team in the Northern Territory. The vision of the Communicate Study is to ensure more Aboriginal patients receive culturally safe healthcare in their first language. The goal of this study is to improve the health outcomes of Aboriginal peoples accessing healthcare in the NT and support a positive experience of care.The Research Assistant will be responsible to undertake qualitative data collection (interviews) to understand the experiences of Aboriginal people in the health care system as well as co-facilitate training in cultural safety for health care providers at Royal Darwin Hospital and other Top End Hospitals through an existing program called ‘Ask the Specialist Plus’. The Study program comprises weekly training sessions of 8-week blocks for healthcare providers. The Research Assistant will support reflective discussion, draw on ‘lived experience’ and answer questions about healthcare interactions with Aboriginal clients. Scale up to other participating hospitals (Palmerston, Katherine and Gove District Hospitals) is planned during the 5-year study.This position is based in Darwin and will require some travel to regional locations throughout NT for up to 2 days, up to three times per year.What you will bring to the roleAs an enthusiastic, qualified professional, you will have tertiary qualifications or an equivalent qualification or research experience.The successful applicant will:have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of matters concerning the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoplesunderstand barriers and enablers to improving communication between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and health providersUnderstand cultural safety in an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander context and how cultural safety impacts on healthcare deliveryhave experience in data collection and analysis for researchhave experience in delivering presentationshave the ability to provide guidance, support and mentoring to junior colleagues.be bilingual, fluent in both an Aboriginal language spoken in the Top End and English.The successful applicant will also have exceptional communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with community stakeholders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations, and the ability to work collaboratively with health professionals and academic colleagues.
