Expression of InterestFull-time (100% FTE), fixed- term contract until 29 December 2023, based in DarwinBe part of an exciting opportunity!Menzies is looking for an experience Research Officer to join Menzies Laboratory team within the Child Health Division.The Child Health Division at Menzies is responsible for a multi-disciplinary research program focused on respiratory and ear health, life course and clinical trial research that is conducted in partnership with external stakeholders, government agencies, communities, health services, schools and non-government organisations. The goal of these studies is to develop policies and practice that improve health outcomes for childrenThis laboratory-based position primarily entails performing microbiological tests to support our Paediatric Respiratory Microbiome Research Program. The Research Officer will perform a range of laboratory techniques which may include, but are not limited to, bacterial cultures, nucleic acid extractions, PCR testing, bacterial interaction assays, host-microbial interaction assays, biofilm testing and phage assays. The Research Officer will be expected to establish, optimise and validate new methods, as required. The role will provide opportunities for career development through contributions to publications and supervision of junior staff and students. The position is based at the Menzies Laboratory in Darwin.What you will bring to the roleAs an enthusiastic, qualified professional with a PhD in microbiology or relevant tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent research experience.The successful applicant will also have experience in a research microbiology laboratory; interpreting and communicating laboratory findings to diverse audiences; contributing to the preparation of scientific publications; supporting the supervision of junior team members; and be proficient using software such as Microsoft Office Suite.The role will require highly developed oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively and professionally with people from diverse cultures, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and organisations.Why MenziesMenzies School of Health Research is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes and is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians, and a leader in global and tropical research into life-threatening illnesses.
