Up to 12 months part-time contract (0.6 FTE) based in DarwinAbout Menzies:As one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians, and a leader in global and tropical research into life-threatening illnesses, Menzies School of Health Research continues to translate its research into effective partnerships and programs in communities across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.About the position:The eGFR3 Study represents the third kidney health assessment of adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who at baseline had a range of kidney function from healthy to advanced kidney damage (but not receiving renal replacement therapy). The first eGFR Study assessment occurred during 2007-2011 across 20 sites in 5 regions of Australia (Top-End NT, Central Australia, Kimberley, Goldfields and North Queensland). The eGFR3 Study is committed to partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities to enable answers to health questions and support improved health outcomes. Indigenous leadership is present in all aspects of the study conduct, including within the community, clinical and research governance groups. Using direct health assessments (including biomedical sampling) and indirect health assessment (data linkage principles), the eGFR3 Study aims to describe the long-term kidney health and level of kidney function of adults from baseline.The Research Nurse will be responsible for organising and preparing participant visits, collecting and processing data and biomedical specimens, entering data and following up participants. This position will be based in Darwin and will require some travel (by light aircraft or 4WD) to regional, remote locations including capital cities throughout the NT, WA and QLD for up to 1-5 days at a time once a month.Under the broad direction of the eGFR3 Project Manager the Research Nurse will:Perform all clinical aspects of the eGFR3 study research project including: locating past participants of the eGFR studies, assessing eligibility to re-enrol; explanation of the project in lay terms to potential participants; obtaining informed consent; review of medical records; completion of questionnaires and case report forms; collection and processing of specimens for analysis and transport to laboratories; clinical assessments such as height, weight, waist, hip and blood pressure measurements; all protocol activities; assessment for adverse events and follow-up pathology results for reporting to participants and their healthcare provider as required.Ensure correct details of clinical history and all assessments are recorded for study participants and noted in the medical records where appropriate.Accurately enter the study data into the eGFR3 Microsoft Access database and perform periodic data monitoring checks using a framework outlined in eGFR3 Study Specific Procedures.Participate in eGFR3 meetings, including taking minutes if required.Ensure the research is conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice Guidelines, ethics approvals, cultural guidelines, Study Specific Procedures and Menzies policies and procedures.Collect all trial data and ensure it is stored/transmitted appropriately in accordance with ethical, cultural, and confidentiality requirements.Assist with/coordinate and participate at study visits both locally and in participating communities in remote areas, either via air or road (manual 4WD), under limited supervision if required.Communicate and coordinate effectively with study participants, the Project Manager, Chief Investigators, and other project staff.Develop productive, co-operative working relationships with other members of the research team and division.Assist with the conduct of other research activities as required.The successful applicant will have:Tertiary qualification in Nursing and registration with the relevant Board of the Health Professions Licensing Authority and at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience.Demonstrated experience working with, and knowledge of, health issues affecting Indigenous Australians.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to a range of audiences including multidisciplinary teams, people from diverse cultures and including Indigenous peoples.Ability to work independently, and as part of a research team, maintaining confidentiality of data and personal information.Demonstrated attention to detail, organisational and time management skills and proven ability to meet deadlines.High degree of computer/technology literacy including experience with a range of computer software applications; the Microsoft Office suite and data/patient records management applications.Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and good problem-solving skills; a willingness to undertake training in the skills required to complete all protocol activities, such as anthropometric and bioimpedance measurements, shipping specimens, phlebotomy.Willingness and ability to maintain a current Northern Territory Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card), Australian driver’s license, police clearance and the ability to travel to towns and remote communities in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia, for up to a week at a time (interstate travel - approximately once a month from late 2021/2022) and including outside of business hours.The ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.Contact: Tracy Turnbull at tracy.turnbull@menzies.edu.au What we offer:6 weeks annual leave (0.6 FTE)Option to increase super to 14%Attractive salary package and benefits $111,196 - $119,626 pa, pro-rata salary package (comprising gross salary $87,586 - $95,051, pa, pro-rata superannuation and salary packaging benefits.Closing date: Sunday, 20 December 2020 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.Applicants are required to address the selection criteria.
